Cox Communications has announced that its broadband Internet customers can now access cloud-based storage from their mobile smartphones with the launch of new applications for Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone and Android systems.
The company's new Cox Secure Online Backup applications are free, as is the storage service for customers of Cox High-Speed Internet Service. In addition to mobile access, the storage capabilities also already can be accessed via a secure website and Windows and Macintosh clients.
Online backup and storage services are quickly becoming a standard offering for many Internet service providers, and cable TV companies have been zeroing in on that trend in recent months. Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), for example, launched its Upware portal, which connects to many different third party back-up services, last month, while Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) announced its own online backup service for business customers in January. Cox's mobile access apps are a nod to the growing demand for storage access while customers are on the go, and not just tied to their desktops.
