Two profs are the bomb in chip research: Niknejad and Goodson

Two professors from Stanford and UC Berkeley won awards for excellence in chip research from the Semiconductor Industry Association and the Semiconductor Research Corp.

They are Stanford Mechanical Engineering Prof. Dr. Kenneth Goodson and UC Berkeley Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Prof. Dr. Ali Niknejad.  They will honored Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. EST in a virtual event.

Both SIA and SRC have put a premium on research, which SIA President John Neuffer called the “engine of innovation in the semiconductor industry.” The work by both professors will “help keep America at the leading edge of innovation,” he said.

Both organizations are developing a 10-year plan outlining chip research priorities to help spur growth in AI, quantum and advanced wireless communications.  The report calls for a $3.4 billion federal investment over the next decade to fund chip R&D.  Every dollar the federal government invests adds more than $16 to the U.S. GPD, SIA has said.

Both professors have worked with 1,700 graduate students sponsored by SRC.

Goodson is being recognized for work in understanding heat generation and transport in nanometer-sized transistors and advanced cooling methods in integrated circuits.  He holds a doctorate in ME from MIT and is an IEEE Fellow.

Niknejad is being recognized for achievements that have advanced RF, analog and mm-wave circuit design and modeling which serve as the foundation of 5G+.  He holds a doctorate in EE from UC Berkeley and is also an IEEE Fellow.
