Apple hosts CCC Plugfest to advance digital key interoperability

Apple was a charter member of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) and an early proponent of using a smartphone for digital car key functions, launching that capability as early as 2020. Last week, the company played a key role in an event that will spread digital key capabilities to more vehicles and mobile devices.

The tech giant hosted the CCC’s 13th Plugfest in Cupertino, California, where a broad range of companies from the automotive and mobile device sectors convened to test Version 4 of the CCC’s Digital Key specification. The Plugfest activities were aimed at further improving cross-platform interoperability and cross-version compatibility as digital key adoption continues to grow rapidly.

Participating companies include Apple, BMW, Continental Automotive Technologies GmbH, DEKRA Testing and Certification S.A.U, Ellisys SA, Ford Motor Company, Google, Hyundai Motor Company, Lucid Group, Inc., Motorola Mobility LLC, Rivian Volkswagen Group Technologies, Technica Engineering GmbH, and TTA, a CCC Authorized Test Lab. 

Since CCC’s last Plugfest in March, which was hosted by BMW in Germany, the group expanded the connectivity methods covered in its certification program beyond Near-Field Communications (NFC) to include Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra WideBand (UWB) technologies, further supporting digital key adoption across the evolving connected vehicle landscape. 

Daniel Knobloch, vice president of the CCC, told Fierce Electronics that smartphones and other devices involved need to be able to support one of those technologies to participate in Version 4 test case validation, so iPhone model number or car model year do not figure in the requirements.

“Plugfest testing focuses on interoperability between both sides,” he added. “It validates that digital key implementations from devices and vehicles work reliably together.”

He further explained how the Plugfest works. “Each participating company runs test cases against the other party’s implementations in a controlled, real-world setup. The goal is to validate test cases, identify issues before formal certification and strengthen cross-platform compatibility.”  

Plugfest highlights, according to the CCC, included:

  • CCC Digital Key Version 4 Test Case Validation: Participants completed validation of remaining Version 4 test cases and began testing newly introduced scenarios supporting the certification roadmap.
  • Cross-Version Interoperability Testing: Implementations of CCC Digital Key Versions 3 and 4 were tested across multiple vehicles and devices to identify candidate Interoperability Designated List (IDL) devices and ensure robust cross-version compatibility.
  • Test Equipment and Lab Engagement: BLE and UWB equipment vendors demonstrated development and certification tools, while CCC-authorized labs are conducting conformance checks across Parts 1-5 of the test suite using official CCC equipment.
  • Real-World Testing Conditions: Testing sessions happened in parallel across indoor labs and outdoor spaces, giving participants the opportunity to validate under real-world conditions.

As vehicles become more connected, the supporting ecosystem is quickly expanding. According to McKinsey & Company, the global automotive software and electronics market is projected to reach $462 billion by 2030, more than doubling since 2019. Standards like CCC’s Digital Key are critical to ensuring this transformation remains secure, interoperable, and user-friendly, the CCC said.
