Usage of biometric face recognition capabilities is growing rapidly, but the technology, particularly when based on 2D cameras or structured light systems, is far from perfect.
Metalenz is looking to change that with Polar ID, a meta-surface-enabled polarization Imaging solution that won the award for Best Imaging and Optical Sensing Solution on May 6 in the Sensors Converge 2026 Best of Sensors competition. Polar ID was picked by a field of professional judges who evaluated products across 11 sectors for innovation, market value and their ability to address critical challenges in the sensor ecosystem. Sensors Converge and Fierce Sensors are under the Questex umbrella.
Face authentication systems that use structured light projection often are costly, bulky, and struggle in bright lighting, while 2D multi-camera stacks, though more affordable, are vulnerable to spoofing and also struggle in some lighting conditions. The advancing ability of AI masking to fool conventional face authentication techniques also is a major concern.
Polar ID addresses these issues with a solution that employs a single flat optic integrated directly on a standard image sensor. It captures a human-specific polarization signature in a single near-infrared image by leveraging metasurface optics technology. The system combines this unique polarization data with computational imaging algorithms and machine learning to distinguish real human skin from photos masks or deep-fake attacks, according to Metalenz.
The result is a compact, low-cost, liveness-verified authentication system that Metalenz said can deliver spoof-resistant, payment-grade face authentication for consumer devices like smartphones, tablets, and smart home devices, and in applications such as transportation security and payment kiosks. It also helps establish foundational trust for autonomous AI agents operating on such devices. Metalenz said Polar ID can be easily manufactured at the wafer level using existing foundry capabilities, and already is being evaluated by numerous OEMs.
