The Rosemount 3408 Non-Contacting Level Transmitter is a versatile radar device designed for level measurement and overfill prevention in both liquid and solid applications across various industries, including chemical, mining, metal, construction, and energy. The transmitter provides a measurement range of up to 98 feet (30 meters) and features Smart Echo Supervision technology that automatically tracks all echoes, distinguishing those from internal tank obstructions from the actual product surface echo.

One of the key innovations of the Rosemount 3408 is its Smart Echo Supervision technology, which eliminates concerns about internal tank obstructions or nozzle placement. This advanced surface tracking technology ensures that the true product level is reported reliably and accurately, even in challenging environments with internal vessel obstructions. The system automatically identifies and filters out false echoes, providing consistent and precise measurements.

The transmitter is particularly effective in dusty environments, where traditional ultrasonic level transmitters and laser devices often struggle. Non-contacting radar technology maintains accuracy even with fluctuations in temperature, pressure, or the presence of dust inside tanks. For extremely dusty conditions, the device offers purging options to maintain optimal performance.

Smart diagnostics represent another significant advancement in the Rosemount 3408 design. The transmitter features Signal Quality Metrics that provide early alerts for abnormal conditions and material build-up, enabling proactive maintenance planning. Smart Meter Verification allows for automatic health checks and report generation without interrupting the process, while an on-board Data Historian provides three days of historical measurement data for troubleshooting and process insights.

The device incorporates convenient configuration and maintenance capabilities through optional Bluetooth wireless technology. This feature allows technicians to perform maintenance tasks and configuration adjustments without direct physical access to the transmitter, improving both safety and efficiency. The Smart Echo Level Test enables proof-testing from the control room, further enhancing operational convenience.

Enhanced by exchangeable electronic parts, The Rosemount 3408 reduces complexity and inventory requirements for maintenance teams. The transmitter is NAMUR-type tested and third-party certified to IEC61508 for use in safety critical applications, ensuring reliability in demanding industrial environments.

When presenting the award, judges commented that the Rosemount 3408 provides “clear economic and operational benefit across a broad range of use cases” with “strong ROI, especially in dusty or hard to reach solids storage environments.” The judges noted its “strong real-world performance in difficult sensing environments” and praised its “high uptime, fewer false positives, and excellent adaptability.”

Applications for the Rosemount 3408 span numerous industries and materials, including MAP/DAP granules storage in chemical processing, fly ash silos in energy and wastewater treatment, plastics production, grain storage in food and beverage operations, conveyor belts and powdered metals in mining, and cement applications in construction. The transmitter helps users maintain inventory tracking, measure product availability, streamline operations, and reduce downtime.
