Sensors are used to stop ski jump suit cheating

Sensors in the form of RFID chips are being used to prevent cheating by manipulating the lift capability of ski jumpers’ suits at the 2026 Winter Olympics.  So far, there are no reports of violations. 

The controversy arose before the games began in what has been elegantly dubbed “penis gate” and widely reported. Ski jumpers were reportedly enhancing their genitals with injections of hyaluronic acid, to then enhance the size of the ski suit being worn and also enhance their lift like a “sail” once a jumper soars.

Many jumps lift athletes for the length of a football field, so even a small improvement could make a difference in a tight competition.

The sensors come into play in a somewhat different fashion, however, where they have been installed in suits to detect tampering to add more fabric or stiffer fabric to a suit. That kind of detection has been around since at least 2025 when two ski jumpers from Norway were suspended for three months at the world championships on charges of manipulating suit crotch seams.

Some experts reported last year that if the surface area of the suit increases by just 2 cm, air resistance decreases by 4% and lift increases by 5%. In sum, distance could increase by nearly 6 meters.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation in 2024 implemented the use of tamper-proof NFC microchips in ski jumping suits to help prevent illegal suit modifications. In the Norway tampering, coaches and staff were found to have added stiff material to the crotch area to enhance lift. The cheating was exposed through a secret video posted to YouTube.

NFC chips can be used to detect tampering with position sensing as well as changes in temperature, and other environmental factors, but it isn’t clear how the ski jump suit sensors would also be used to detect movement in fibers through tampering to add more material to a suit. A resistive sensor circuit would probably do the trick. NFC works over transmitting sensor data through a wireless connection.

An NFC sensor wouldn’t much help officials to detect cheating if an athlete was enhancing genital size, especially if the enhancement happened before the suit measurements were made to create a more generous suit. That kind of violation would come under a 3D scan ( arguably analogous to a sensor) to compare body measurements with a suit in real time before a competition, according to the International Ski Federation cited by the Sun of the UK.  In early February, the World Anti-Doping Agency was investigating the injection allegations, according to a report in ChosunBiz.   WADA did not immediately respond to a request to comment.
