At Sensors Converge 2025 next week, Bosch Sensortec is spotlighting new tools and platforms to support the integration of the world’s smallest particulate matter sensor, the BMV080. The sensor itself is 450 times smaller than any comparable device on the market.
Developers will be able to evaluate the BMV080 with plug and play tools and also see a working end-product such as the PurpleAir PIXEL portable air quality monitor, the company said in a statement. The sensor is now available and three new evaluation and dev platforms are launching to simplify testing and accelerate prototyping. These tools come with preconfigured software and are designed to reduce engineering effort for air quality sensing prototypes.
A Shuttle Board 3.1 offers direct access to sensor capabilities, while a Polverine combines the BMV080 with the BME690 gas sensors on a Wi-Fi, Blutooth-enabled ESP32 platform. Also, a SparkFun MBV080 breakout board offers a Quiic interface to connect to Quiic-ready microcontrollers with no soldering.
All the tools are designed to quicken product development even with limited engineering resources. At Sensors Converge, Bosch Sensortec said it will demonstrate how these platforms fit into a “streamlined development flow that starts with the sensor itself and end with a consumer-ready product like PurpleAir PIXEL.
“Together with our partners, we’re making environmental sensing not just available, but truly usable – instantly, intuitively, and reliably. Developer tools like Polverine and the SparkFun BMV080 breakout board are key enablers of a growing ecosystem around our sensor platforms,” said Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO at Bosch Sensortec in a statement.
The BMV080 particulate matter sensors uses a design based on ultra-compact lasers with integrated photodiodes. Algorithms are applied to measure the PM2.5 concentration direction in free spaces, without the need for a fan. The sensor is designed to be easily integrated into ultra-compact IoT based smart home and smart building systems. It measures just 4.4 x 3 x 3 mm, about 450 times smaller than any comparable device on the market.
Bosch Sensortec also said it will show the BME690, the world’s smallest 4-in-1 air quality sensor, and the BMI330, an IMU for enhancing applications. Gesture-controlled lighting and advancements in smart metering will also be part of what Bosch Sensortec shows.
